FINISHING

Sew eyes to Head.
With Black, work satin stitch for nose (Fig. 3) and straight stitch for mouth (Fig. 4).
Trace heart pattern and cut two hearts from felt. Place one heart at the bottom of each foot and work blanket stitch around each heart as follows: Thread tapestry needle with four strands of embroidery floss; knot one end of floss. Bring needle up at 1, even with edge of heart. Go down into heart at 2 and come up at 3, keeping floss below point of needle (Fig. 1a). Continue to stitch in this manner around entire heart, keeping stitches even (Fig. 1b). Stitches should be approximately ¼" long and ¼" apart.

GAUGE
Correct gauge is essential for proper size. Hook sizes given in instructions are merely guides and should never be used without first making a sample swatch in the stitch, yarn or thread, and hook specified. Then measure it, counting your stitches and rows carefully. If your swatch is smaller than specified, try again with a larger size hook; if larger, try again with a smaller size. Keep trying until you find the size that will give you the specified gauge. DO NOT HESITATE TO CHANGE HOOK SIZE TO OBTAIN CORRECT GAUGE.
MARKERS
Markers are used to help distinguish the beginning of each round being worked. Place a 2” scrap piece of yarn before the first stitch of each round, moving marker after each round is complete.
DECREASES
BEGINNING DECREASE
Pull up a loop in first 2 sts, YO and draw through all 3 loops
on hook (counts as one sc).
DECREASE
Pull up a loop in next 2 sts, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook (counts as one sc).
FREE LOOPS
When instructed to work in free loops of a chain, work in loop indicated by arrow (Fig. 2).

SATIN STITCH
Satin Stitch is a series of straight stitches worked side by side so they touch but do not overlap. Come up at odd numbers and go down at even numbers (Fig. 3).

Straight Stitch is just what the name implies, a single, straight stitch. Come up at 1 and go down at 2 (Fig. 4).
